Innocent XI financed the Holy League's campaign against the Ottomans almost entirely through personal austerity and diplomatic pressure — he famously cut papal court expenditures to redirect funds toward the defense of Vienna in 1683. This testone was struck the following year, directly in the shadow of that victory. The motto, taken from Acts 20:35, was not decorative piety; Innocent had already been censured by Louis XIV for refusing to subordinate Church finances to French political interests, and the phrase carried a pointed edge in that climate.
