| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a large ornamental cartouche of Baroque design, composed of richly modelled acanthus scrollwork, floral rosettes at the sides, and a grotesque mask at the base, all enclosed within a milled border. Within the cartouche, the devotional motto MELIVS EST DARE QVAM ACCIPERE is inscribed in four lines of bold capital letters across the field, the text drawn from Acts 20:35. The absence of any figural imagery focuses attention entirely on the pious inscription, reflecting the charitable ideals associated with the pontificate of Innocent XI. The overall execution is characteristic of the high Baroque engraving tradition of the late seventeenth-century Roman mint. |
