Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — was beatified in 1956 and remains one of the more financially disciplined pontiffs of the early modern period, having spent much of his reign attempting to bankroll a Christian coalition against Ottoman expansion. The motto on this testone, drawn from Acts 20:35, was not decorative piety: Innocent ran the papal treasury with unusual austerity, personally curtailing the sale of offices and resisting nepotism to a degree that made him genuinely unpopular within the Curia.
His broader conflict with Louis XIV over Gallicanism culminated in 1688 when France occupied Avignon — minting of this type continued through that crisis without interruption.
