Within the cartouche, the five-word Latin motto is inscribed in four lines across the field: MELIVS / EST·DARE / QVAM / ACCIPERE, a biblical aphorism drawn from Acts 20:35 meaning 'It is better to give than to receive,' reflecting the charitable ideals publicly espoused by Innocent XI.
