Within the cartouche, the Latin devotional inscription MELIVS EST DARE QVAM ACCIPERE — meaning 'It is better to give than to receive' (Acts 20:35) — is rendered in four lines of bold roman capital lettering. The date 1684 appears below the inscription in arabic numerals, completing the design within the ornamental frame.
