Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, facing left with shoulder-length straight hair rendered in fine detail, presented in the Renaissance portrait style characteristic of late 15th-century Italian coinage. The effigy is boldly modeled in high relief against a flat field. The circular legend HERCVLES·DVX·FERRARIAE·II· runs along the periphery in Latin capital letters, separated by pellet stops.
