| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Carlo V) facing right, rendered in Renaissance style with naturalistic portraiture showing bearded features and armor at the shoulder. The effigy is boldly struck in high relief with fine hair and facial detail characteristic of Milanese die-cutting of the mid-sixteenth century. The peripheral legend reads IMP·CAES·CAROLVS·V·AVG, disposed around the full circumference of the coin in well-spaced Roman capitals separated by pellet stops. |

| Reverse description | The Pillars of Hercules (Plus Ultra device), depicted as two fluted classical columns rising from stylized ocean waves rendered in bold relief, each column entwined by a sinuous scroll banner bearing the imperial motto. The composition alludes to Charles V's dominion beyond the classical boundaries of the known world and is the emblematic device of his reign. The reverse field is unlettered, with the design filling the coin's face to a beaded inner border. |
