Additional information

Benedict XIII called the 1725 Jubilee despite significant opposition within the Curia, who viewed the elderly Dominican pope as an ascetic eccentric more interested in saying mass than governing the Church. He was already 75 and had twice refused the papacy before finally accepting in 1724. The Jubilee coinage was struck for the influx of pilgrims to Rome — a practical necessity, not a prestige project.

Pietro Francesco Orsini had taken the name Benedict XIII partly in honor of his admired predecessor Benedict XI, also a Dominican. His reign is now largely remembered for the catastrophic influence of his secretary Niccolò Coscia, later tried and convicted of corruption by the next pope.
