Giovanni Galeazzo Maria Sforza became Duke of Milan at age seven in 1476 following his father Galeazzo Maria's assassination in Santo Stefano church on St. Stephen's Day. Real power passed immediately to his mother Bona di Savoia and her advisor Cicco Simonetta — a regency that collapsed in 1480 when Ludovico il Moro engineered Simonetta's execution and effectively seized control. This piece, struck in gold rather than the silver of a standard teston, was almost certainly a presentation or trial striking produced during that narrow regency window, documenting a political authority that was already eroding as the dies were cut.
