| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central design features the Monument of Independence superimposed upon an outline map of Turkmenistan, rendered in low relief at the centre of the field. The circular legend around the periphery reads the opening words of the national anthem, 'GARAŞSYZ BITARAP TÜRKMENISTAN' (Independent Neutral Turkmenistan), in Latin script. The overall composition reflects the national symbolism adopted following independence. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse displays the large numeral '1' within a raised circular border at the centre of the field, with the denomination 'teňňe' inscribed immediately below in lowercase Latin script. The issuer legend 'TÜRKMENISTANYŇ MERKEZI BANKY' (Central Bank of Turkmenistan) arcs around the upper periphery, while the date '2009' appears at the bottom. Five small decorative carpet-motif ornaments are evenly spaced around the outer rim, flanking the date and lower sides, referencing traditional Turkmen textile art. |

The teňňe series was introduced in 2009 as part of a currency redenomination that replaced the manat at a rate of 5,000 old manat to one new manat — itself a correction of the staggering inflation that had hollowed out the post-Soviet monetary system over the preceding decade and a half. Nickel-plated steel at this denomination reflects a straightforward cost calculation; the face value warranted nothing more.
