Issued as part of Kazakhstan's long-running wildlife conservation series, this coin belongs to a program the National Bank has used since the late 1990s to spotlight species endemic to Central Asian terrain — the snow leopard among the most politically prominent, having been adopted as a national symbol. The irbis carries particular weight in Kazakhstani national identity, appearing on the coat of arms of Almaty and embedded in the branding of the country's sovereign wealth structures.
