Obverse description Quartered shield of arms of Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner surmounted by a mural crown, the quarters alternating the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John with the Cotoner family arms featuring a tree motif. The denomination numeral 'I' appears to the left of the shield. The circular legend, rendered in Latin capitals, runs along the beaded border and identifies the issuer as Fra Nicolas Cotoner, Grand Master of the Hospital of Jerusalem.
