Obverse description Central field displays the quartered coat of arms of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, surmounted by a crowned helm, the shield divided into four quarters bearing the armorial devices of the Order of St. John and the Wignacourt family. The arms are rendered in relief with fine detail typical of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the legend running along the outer border within a secondary beaded ring. The overall die work reflects the Mediterranean artistic tradition of the Order's Valletta Mint.
