Mahmud Shah I ruled Gujarat for over half a century — one of the longest reigns in the Sultanate's history — and presided over a period of considerable commercial expansion through the ports of Surat and Cambay. The copper tanka occupied the lowest tier of the monetary hierarchy, and the sheer duration of this reign means die varieties and weight inconsistencies across issues are common enough to reward careful attribution.
