Nasir al-Din Mahmud Shah I ruled Gujarat for over five decades — one of the longest reigns of any sultan in the Sultanate's history — during which the kingdom reached the height of its commercial power, controlling key ports on the Arabian Sea that connected the spice and textile trades between India and the Persian Gulf. The tanka issued under his authority circulated through one of the most active mercantile economies in the medieval Islamic world.
His reign ended with the Mughal invasion under Babur's successors pressing into Rajputana, and Gujarat's independence would survive only a generation beyond his death before falling to Humayun in 1535.
