Muzaffar Shah II ruled Gujarat for nearly three decades, but the window this coin falls within — 1517 to 1526 — captures the sultanate at a precarious moment. The Portuguese had established themselves at Goa in 1510 and were aggressively disrupting the Arabian Sea trade routes that underpinned Gujarat's commercial wealth. Muzaffar attempted to counter this through alliance with the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and the Zamorin of Calicut, culminating in the Battle of Diu in 1509, fought just before this coin's range but whose consequences shaped the entire period of issue.
Copper tankas of this sultanate are frequently found corroded or fragmentary; intact examples are less common than the silver coinage.
