Muzaffar Shah II ruled Gujarat from 1511 to 1526, a reign that saw the sultanate at the height of its naval power — and its most humiliating defeat. In 1509, just before his accession, the combined Muslim fleet of Gujarat and Egypt was destroyed by the Portuguese at the Battle of Diu, effectively ending any serious challenge to Portuguese dominance of Indian Ocean trade. The copper tanka issues of his reign were struck against the backdrop of that strategic collapse, with Gujarat's merchants increasingly forced to accommodate Portuguese commercial pressure along the western coast.
