Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud was the last sultan of the independent Bengal Sultanate, ruling a polity that had maintained autonomy from Delhi for over a century. His reign ended when Sher Shah Suri — then consolidating the Sur Empire after defeating the Mughal emperor Humayun — absorbed Bengal entirely by 1538, extinguishing the sultanate permanently. Coins struck at the Da mint during these final years are effectively the last independent silver issues of medieval Bengal.
