Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud was the last independent sultan of Bengal before Sher Shah Suri's campaigns dismantled the sultanate entirely. His reign was defined less by consolidation than by the unraveling of a dynasty that had governed Bengal for over two centuries. The Arsah mint, operating in the southwestern Bengal region, continued striking through a period of mounting Mughal and Sur pressure on the sultanate's borders.
The Bengal tanka series from this terminal phase is chronologically compressed — six years at most — which keeps survivor populations genuinely limited rather than artificially so.
