Struck during the turbulent reign of Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud Shah, the last ruler of the Hussain Shahi dynasty, this tanka was issued in the years immediately preceding the Sher Shah Suri invasion that would extinguish the Bengal Sultanate as an independent polity in 1538. The absence of a mint name — unusual even by the loose standards of late Hussain Shahi practice — likely reflects administrative breakdown rather than deliberate policy, as Sher Shah's campaigns disrupted Bengal's minting infrastructure well before the final conquest.
