The shield is surmounted by a Portuguese royal crown rendered in raised relief. The rim is decorated with a broad radiating pattern of fine oblique lines forming a decorative border around the entire field. The design is executed in a simple but bold hammered style typical of colonial Goan coinage of the early nineteenth century. |

Miguel I's claim to the Portuguese throne rested on his 1828 coup against the constitutional order, and the coinage struck at Goa during his reign reflects the administrative continuity of a distant colonial mint carrying on regardless of the dynastic chaos unfolding in Lisbon. The Goa mint had operated under successive Portuguese regimes for centuries, and Miguel's four-year window before his 1834 abdication and exile was barely enough time for these heavy copper pieces to reach full circulation across the Estado da India.
Miguel was formally stripped of all rights to the Portuguese crown by the Convention of Évora Monte in May 1834, which renders the terminal date on this issue precisely datable to that political settlement.
