Obverse description The quartered Royal Portuguese coat of arms occupies the central field, displaying the characteristic escutcheon with castles and shields in hammered relief. The mint letters G and A flank the shield to the left and right respectively, serving as the Goa mint mark. The design is rendered in the crude but expressive style typical of hammered colonial coinage of the period. The irregular flan exhibits the characteristic uneven surfaces of hand-struck production.
