Reverse description The gridiron of Saint Lawrence is depicted prominently in the centre of the field, symbolising the martyrdom of the saint patron, with flames rising beneath the instrument of martyrdom. The date is split across the field, with the numerals 16 to the left and 40 to the right of the central device, divided by the gridiron. A beaded border frames the design along the coin's periphery. The overall execution is consistent with the hammered coinage tradition of the Goa mint in the early seventeenth century.
