Filipe III of Portugal — Felipe IV of Spain — never set foot in India, yet coins struck in his name circulated across Goa, Ceylon, and the Estado da India's sprawling network of coastal trading posts. This issue from the Ceylon mint dates to the final year of the Iberian Union: in December 1640, the Duke of Braganza seized the Portuguese throne as João IV, ending sixty years of Spanish rule. Coins minted that year straddle two dynasties in the most literal sense — production continued under the old royal authority while the political order collapsed in Lisbon.
