Obverse description Central crowned coat of arms of Portugal, featuring the quartered royal shield with castles and escutcheons, surmounted by a royal crown. The mint marks 'C' and 'Lº', denoting the Ceilão (Ceylon) mint, flank the shield to left and right respectively within the field. The design is rendered in the crude hammered style typical of Portuguese colonial coinage of the period, set within a beaded border.

Reverse description Central device depicts the gridiron of Saint Lawrence (São Lourenço), the patron saint of the Ceilão mint, shown upright with vertical bars over stylised flames at the base. The date is divided to either side of the gridiron, with '16' to the left and '40' to the right within the field. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border, characteristic of hammered colonial Portuguese issues.
