Obverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed at center, comprising the escutcheon of Portugal with five bezants arranged in quincunx within a smaller inescutcheon, all surmounted by a royal crown rendered in bold relief. The shield is flanked by decorative elements characteristic of hammered colonial coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, typical of this hammered issue, with a beaded border partially visible around the periphery. No legible legend surrounds the device, consistent with the Ceilão (Ceylon) mint variety catalogued without mint letters.
