| Obverse description | Central field bears the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the five quinas and the seven castles of Portugal — set within an elaborate baroque cartouche with foliate scrollwork. The crowned escutcheon is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The legend 'INDIA PORTUG:' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, flanked left and right by the milled border. The date '1871' appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a prominent beaded border. |
