Obverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed centrally within a crowned shield, quartered with the five escutcheons of Portugal in the first and fourth quarters and the castles of the Kingdom in the bordure. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. To the left of the shield, the initial letter 'G' appears in the field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border on an irregularly shaped hammered flan.
