Issued to mark the 1986 wedding of Malietoa Tanumafili II's son, this is one of several commemorative talas Samoa produced through the 1980s in partnership with the Franklin Mint and similar commercial minting operations targeting the collector market rather than circulation. Most were struck in quantities far exceeding local demand and exported wholesale to overseas distributors.
Tanumafili II himself held the O le Ao o le Malo — head of state — position from 1962 until his death in 2007, the longest-serving head of state in the world at the time of his death.
