This coin was struck to mark the 1982 visit of Pope John Paul II to Samoa — one of the earliest stops on his extensive Pacific tour — and Tanumafili II, as head of state, provided the formal invitation and reception. Samoa was the first Pacific Island nation the Pope visited. Tanumafili II himself later converted to the Bahá'í Faith, making him the first head of state in the world to do so.
