This issue commemorates Lindbergh's 1927 transatlantic flight, the 50th anniversary of which prompted a wave of commemorative coinage across multiple nations that year. Samoa's entry into that commemorative rush is somewhat incongruous — Lindbergh had no particular connection to the islands — but the series reflects the broader Pacific Island strategy of the 1970s, when newly independent or semi-autonomous territories issued collector-targeted commemoratives as a foreign exchange mechanism.
