Beschrijving keerzijde The right-facing bust of the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus occupies the right portion of the field, depicted with long flowing hair in a style consistent with Renaissance portraiture. To the left of the bust, a detailed heliocentric orrery or armillary sphere diagram illustrates the solar system with the sun at the centre and planetary orbits radiating outward in a gridded hemispheric design. The curved legend NICOLAUS COPERNICUS 1473-1543 arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by a beaded border. The issue year 2010 is inscribed in the lower exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

Samoa's micro-gold program produced numerous small-denomination collector pieces in the late 2000s and early 2010s, most tied to anniversary or commemorative pretexts. The Copernicus issue almost certainly marks the 2010 calendar proximity to anniversaries associated with his work, though no singular event falls precisely on that year — his birth was 1473, the publication of De revolutionibus in 1543.

At 0.5 grams, these are among the smallest legal-tender gold coins produced by any issuing authority, struck for the collector market rather than any practical monetary function.
