Tokelau — three coral atolls with a combined land area under 12 square kilometres — became a New Zealand dependency in 1948 and has used New Zealand currency for daily transactions ever since. The Tala series was introduced partly as a revenue mechanism, with collector coinage providing one of the few income streams available to an administration with virtually no exportable resources beyond stamps and coins themselves.
The second portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Arnold Machin, was adopted across Commonwealth coinage from 1968 onward. Tokelau's use of it here is unremarkable in itself, but the territory's physical isolation meant all coin production was handled entirely off-island through New Zealand intermediaries.
