Shah Alam II was the Mughal emperor in whose name dozens of nominally subordinate princes continued to strike coinage well into the period of British consolidation — by 1799, his authority was largely fictional, his court at Delhi having been devastated by the Maratha-backed raid of Ghulam Qadir in 1788, during which the emperor was blinded. Ratan Singh of Bikaner maintained the Mughal fiction on his copper issues as a matter of political convention rather than any real fealty.
Bikaner's mint output from this period is inconsistently documented, and KM#23 specimens show considerable variation in flan preparation.
