| Obverse description | The entire field is occupied by sixteen Chinese characters arranged in a four-column, four-row grid, deeply engraved in a bold, formal script. The inscription reads from right to left and top to bottom: 咸豐六年 上海縣號 商王永盛 足紋銀餅, meaning 'Year 6 of the Xianfeng reign (1856), Shanghai District, commercial firm of Wang Yung-sheng (Wang Wu-sheng), cake of fine-grade silver.' The characters fill the flat field to the raised rim with no additional decorative elements, reflecting the utilitarian sycee-inspired aesthetic of Shanghai private mint issues. The coin displays attractive iridescent toning with blue and russet hues over the silver surface. |
