1 Sultani - Ahmed I Jaza'ir

The Regency of Algiers operated as an Ottoman vassal state under appointed beylerbeys and, later, pashas — but by the early seventeenth century, the janissary corps had begun accumulating real political leverage that would eventually make the pasha a figurehead. This coin was struck during Ahmed I's sultanate in Constantinople, whose authority nominally extended to Algiers, though the city's mint operated with considerable autonomy in practice.

North African gold sultani coinage of this period is notoriously difficult to attribute precisely; die production was local, and alignment with Istanbul's standards was inconsistent. KM#3 is among the earliest attributed Algerian gold issues.
