Cuenca — officially Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca — declared independence from Spain on November 3, 1820, nearly three years before the Battle of Pichincha secured Ecuadorian independence broadly. The city acted ahead of Quito's own liberation, a sequence of events the region has marked with particular civic pride ever since.
The 2025 date places this among a wave of Ecuadorian commemorative silver issues produced well into the dollarization era, now over two decades since the sucre was abandoned as legal tender in 2000.
