Ecuador has used the US dollar as its official currency since 2000, making the "sucre" denomination on this piece purely nominal — a legal fiction maintained to allow commemorative coinage without technically issuing a competing currency. The sucre itself was abandoned after a catastrophic banking crisis and currency collapse that wiped out savings across the country.
