Obverse description The Ecuadorian national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a condor with spread wings perched atop an oval shield that displays Mount Chimborazo, a steamship on a river, and a radiant sun above the Aries constellation. The shield is flanked by four national flags and two fasces bearing caducei, with a trophy of arms at the base. The denomination UN SUCRE is inscribed in the upper legend, flanked by the weight GRAM. 25 to the left and the fineness 0.900 to the right, all separated by dots. The mint name — LIMA, SANTIAGO, or BIRMINGHAM — appears in the lower exergue. The entire design is bordered by a dentilated rim.

Ecuador's sucre was named after Antonio José de Sucre, the Venezuelan-born general who secured the country's independence at the Battle of Pichincha in 1822. The first sucre coins were struck not in Ecuador — which lacked a functioning mint — but under contract at the Philadelphia Mint and later at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham. This outsourcing arrangement was common among smaller South American republics throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century, and the identifying mint marks remain the primary distinction between issues within this date range.
