Additional information

Maximiliaan van Bronckhorst, Count of Batenburg, exploited the jurisdictional chaos of the early Dutch Revolt to operate his barony's mint well beyond any authority Batenburg realistically commanded. Small silver pieces like this one were struck across a forty-year window during which the United Provinces repeatedly challenged the right of minor lordships to produce coinage at all — the States-General issued formal complaints against precisely these issues, to limited effect.
