Jacob Jeosuah Naar was a prominent merchant in Curaçao's Sephardic Jewish community, and like several traders on the island in the nineteenth century, he issued private token coinage to address the chronic shortage of small change circulating in the Dutch Caribbean. The colonial government tolerated — and at times tacitly encouraged — these merchant tokens, which filled a gap that official Dutch coinage consistently failed to cover at the retail level.
KM#Tn2 distinguishes this piece from at least one other Naar token in the series.
