The Batavian Republic — the French-backed successor state to the Dutch Republic, established in 1795 — inherited the wreckage of the VOC, which had been declared bankrupt and formally dissolved at the end of 1799. Coins continued to be struck under the joint Batavian Republic/VOC authority for the East Indies through 1806, largely to maintain a functioning currency in Java and the surrounding territories during a period of acute administrative chaos.
Napoleon's transformation of the Batavian Republic into the Kingdom of Holland in 1806 effectively ended this series.
