The Batavian Republic — France's satellite state installed after the 1795 invasion — inherited the VOC's colonial obligations just as the Company itself was collapsing under catastrophic debt and mismanagement. The VOC's charter was formally revoked on December 31, 1799, meaning coins struck across that transition year bear the dying authority of a corporation that technically no longer existed by the time the later pieces left the dies.
This issue represents one of the final coinages produced under any VOC mandate anywhere in the Dutch colonial system.
