Obverse description Central field displays a crowned six-fold quartered coat of arms of the Duchy of Cleves, with the denomination numerals I and S flanking the shield on either side. The arms are rendered in the heraldic style typical of early seventeenth-century German territorial coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading NVMMVS.CLIVENSIS (Coin of Kleve), separated from the inner device by a beaded inner border.

The cross is rendered with decorative foliate detailing characteristic of late Renaissance German die-cutting. A circular Latin legend surrounds the cross, reading MO. A - RG: CV - SVS: E - MBRI(C), identifying the coin as a silver issue struck at the mint of Emmerich, separated from the central motif by a beaded border.
