Bulgaria's first prince, Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was still technically a vassal of the Ottoman Empire when these were struck — his recognition by the Porte didn't come until 1896, just five years before this issue. The KM#22.1 designation distinguishes this from the later 22.2 variety, differentiated by a modified reverse die introduced partway through the series run.
