Bulgaria's People's Republic coinage was overhauled in 1974 to replace the earlier socialist arms with a revised state emblem reflecting the country's 1971 constitution, which formally rebranded the nation as the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The "standard legend" designation distinguishes this type from later issues that dropped the founding year from the coat of arms, a change introduced in 1990 as the communist government collapsed and numismatic distinctions between the two variants became the only visible record of that political unraveling.
