Obverse description A rampant lion facing left occupies the central field, its forepaws grasping the quartered shield of Austria-Burgundy, rendered in the bold, slightly crude style characteristic of late-fifteenth-century Flemish billon coinage. The shield displays the combined arms of the Burgundian inheritance claimed during the regency of Philip the Handsome. The figure is contained within a plain inner circle, beyond which the circular Latin legend runs along the coin's periphery between pelleted borders. The overall flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period.
