Mary of Burgundy issued this coin during one of the most politically precarious moments in Flemish history. Her father Charles the Bold had died at Nancy in January 1477, leaving her to face an immediate French invasion of Burgundian territories while simultaneously managing a Flemish estates revolt that forced her to sign the Grand Privilege — stripping the Habsburgs of significant administrative powers over the Low Countries. The 'Vuurijzer' coinage was part of a broader effort to stabilize a monetary system badly disrupted by that succession crisis.
Mary died in March 1482 from a riding accident, making this issue one of the last struck under her sole authority before Maximilian assumed regency for their son Philip.
