In 1488, Philip the Handsome was not yet ruling anything — he was ten years old and effectively a hostage. The citizens of Ghent, in revolt against the regency council governing in his name, briefly held the young Habsburg heir within the city while extracting political concessions from Maximilian of Austria. This coin was struck during that extraordinary episode, when Ghent's mint operated under rebel civic authority while nominally issuing in the name of the captive prince.
The Gelder Hoc and De Pas references catalog several die variants from this short window of production, reflecting the chaotic conditions under which the mint functioned.
