| Reverse description | Central field within a beaded inner circle depicts the rampant lion of Flanders facing left, rendered with vigorous detail typical of late medieval Flemish hammered coinage: the lion is shown with an open mouth, raised forepaws, and a boldly stylised mane and tail. The surrounding peripheral legend in Gothic uncial characters reads: EQVA LIBERTAS DEO GRATA 1488, the motto 'Equal liberty, pleasing to God' alluding to the political circumstances of the Ghent Revolt. The date 1488 is incorporated within the legend, and the overall die work reflects the emergency coinage character of this issue. |
